Just discovered a blog by Ariel Meadow Stallings. She is a writer and local blogger here in Seattle. Recently she started a blog about unplugging from her digital life once per week. I’ve said that I am addicted to the internet before, but I think she’s got a worse case than I do. Visit her blog.

the week newspaper

Good friends of mine, Andrew and Ainsley Sundberg, got my wife and I a subscription to The Week. “The Week distills the best of the U.S. and foreign press into 44 pages–ideal for today’s busy lifestyle,” as described on the website.

The week has been a treasure to read during my long, daily, commute—two hours each day. Typically I have a short attention span and I skip over stories I’m not immediately interested in, but with The Week I force myself to read each article (except the theater stories).

Each week since November 2007 I’ve been learning something new about politics or wine and I feel that I am more educated because of this subscription. One of the best features of The Week is that there are virtually no ads and they are all full-page so I’m not bombarded by intrusive ads every other paragraph. I usually take two days to read The Week or four bus rides.

Follow-up to the post originally dated 2/1/2008…

I heard back from Joel a couple days ago. They decided to go with a name from a designer they also had working on the project. Joel’s team was aggressively seeking the most appropriate name for their needs and had a few teams of people working on the quest.

I am thankful for the opportunity to be creative for someone else. I have too many ideas rolling around in my head to know what to do with.

If you didn’t know. I like tinkering with words to make sentences. I also am very interested in branding and I have done some naming work in the past. It’s fun, but difficult as I told Joel, “It’s like naming a child.”

This morning I opened up my Windows Media Player and checked out the Media Guide. I’ve never seen it before. The first thing I saw was a banner advertising a free Ice Cube live web concert broadcast from SXSW in Austin, Texas on March, 15th.

You can check out his latest video here. Listen to it and melt back into the 1990s.

Dear Ice Cube,
If you ever come to Seattle again I would much like to interview you.

“Everything can be described if it can be observed.” – Larry Cheek

Quote is from writing class last night. Larry talked about description in writing after a couple students used the word nondescript to describe objects in their “reporting by hanging around” articles. He challenged us to look more intently at subjects to find interesting details.

This past weekend my friend Sean played me Synthar’s album “Evenings and Weekends” on the way to “There Will Be Blood.”

I hadn’t heard of the band, but he told me that the members traded files back and forth over the Internet to produce the album. It’s electronic and wonderful to listen to while working on a project.

Not only is the music good, but the physical album jackets are cool too. They appear to be hand screenprinted.

Here are some links for you to investigate:
