“Transform Anger Into Activism”

I can’t remember exactly when I thought of this statement, but I think it was around the time I was working in Hollywood for a community development organization.

While working for that organization I confronted racial and economic tension and anger. I thought it would be more constructive to get active (volunteer, rally, vote, etc) than to just sit around fuming about troubled circumstances.

The “transform” sticker is a collaboration between Joseph King and me for Practical—a creative vision we both worked on more intentionally a few years ago. Today Practical persists in the pages of my notebook.

My friend JJ and his coworker recently curated a White Privilege Exhibit at Seattle Pacific University. I just stumbled upon his blog post about it and thought I would share. I’ve never heard of such an exhibit and it took some guts on their part to pull it off because it’s an awkward topic.

Read JJ’s post about the exhibit here. Check out photos from the exhibit on Flickr.

McFetridge Exhibit

Over a month ago I strolled down to Seattle’s Olympic Sculpture Park on a quiet, overcast Sunday to see an installation exhibit by Geoff McFetridge.

Less hipsters, More crime

I don’t even know what to do with that, but I it’s pretty clever. It’s soo Portland emo… everybody wants to be a hipster, nobody wants to admit it. This was taken on the side of the Gypsy, a tavern on NW 21st and Irving. Home of the fishbowl. -Boone

Daniel “Boone” Rodriguez is one half of Gabriel Boone Photography. He and his brother Gabriel started Gabriel Boone over a year ago. Boone lives in Portland and takes photos—weddings, portraits, stock—for a living. Not a bad life if you ask me. See some of Boone’s work on the Gabriel Boone blog.

Not to be missed exhibit from famed graphic designer, Geoff McFetridge, now on display in Seattle’s Olympic Sculpture Park. The exhibit is entitled The Mind. Find it at the PACCAR Pavilion.

You may have seen McFetridge’s work for the X-Games, Burton Snowboards, Pepsi and his ever-comical “I’m Rockin’ On Your Dime” t-shirt which features a bear seated at a bar with a drink and a smoke. More images of McFetridge’s work found here.

It never surprises me to hear about an old classmate from college who is following their dream or doing well at their chosen profession. A few months ago I was flipping through SPU’s Response alumni magazine and noticed the painting on the back cover was done by Anne Faith Nicholls, a classmate and fellow Ashton Hall dorm dweller back in 1998 and 1999. I’m always interested in hearing about where people land after graduation. Usually I look at illustrations or photographs in magazines and passively turn the page, but when you’ve met the artist it personalizes the viewing experience. Anne has a website too, check out her bio and her work here. You might have already seen her in some VANS shoes ads.
