The other day the power adapter for my PowerBook started sparking at the frayed, exposed section of the cord near the part that plugs into the computer. The white rubber around the cord cracked awhile ago and I’ve been hoping it would hang on until I was able to get a new laptop. Sadly this is not the case.

I researched online and found out I could buy another adapter for $80 or try to find one on eBay for half the cost. The summer before I replaced the hard drive so I’m not eager to plunk down any more money on it because I want to buy one of the new MacBooks rumored to be released in August.

Since I can’t charge my battery and I’m not sure I want to spend more money to keep an old laptop going I’m faced with the decision not to have a computer at home, which will cut down on my Internet use considerably.

I am thinking this could be a prime opportunity for me to unplug from the Internet through the summer or at least update the blog and check email sporadically throughout the week at work if time allows. I’m actually excited about this sabbatical idea. I’ve been losing interest in the digital realm for awhile now. I started canceling all extraneous accounts I had across the web from Yahoo to career sites.

I’m trying to pare down my life and put it in manageable terms. By taking away the clutter and distractions I’m hoping that I can spend more time writing and being creative outside of the computer and the Internet., which is a supreme waste of time and completely distracts from deepest inclinations of creativity.

Have any of you taken a sabbatical from the Internet, blogging, email, digital activities? How’d it go? How long did you take off? Any tips? Did you accomplish goals you wouldn’t have if you stayed “logged in?”

The fraying power cord is a design problem that Apple has acknowledged.
Take it to the Apple Store and tell them that it sparked and could have caused a fire.
Chances are, they’ll replace it for free.
